Moreno Valley

Priorities

Public Safety & Crime Reduction

Providing our Police and Fire personnel with the resources they need is essential. I’ve voted to fund four Community Service Officers, a second Commercial Enforcement Unit, a new Medical Unit for the Fire Department, two Mental Behavioral Assessment Teams, a new Fire Engine, a city wide Flock Safety Camera system, and more.

Tackling illegal fireworks and mailbox theft has been an area of focus during my two terms, and we have seem dramatic improvements on both of these issue areas. In 2020, I voted to increase our firework citation fines from $100 to $1000. During the 2021 4th of July season alone, our police department issued nearly 150 citations, by far the most we’ve ever issued, and it resulted in a very noticeable improvement.

Quality Jobs & Careers

Bringing high paying jobs with career ladders is extremely important to provide all our residents, especially our youth, with the opportunities to lead a very successful life. During my two terms, we’ve brought tens of thousands of jobs to Moreno Valley, and I want to continue recruiting companies in the medical, technology, advanced manufacturing, finance, and other professional fields to provide our residents. Our City has been a commuter City for too long, and I will do everything in my power to take our residents out of rush hour traffic, and into employment in our City. This will ultimately result in less traffic, but more importantly, it will give our neighbors more free time to spend with their children and enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Reducing Homelessness

Addressing the homelessness crisis is not only a priority, it is a passion of mine. When I was first elected, we sprang into action, and established the Homeless to Work program in partnership with the Salvation Army. Since being established, dozens and dozens of homeless individuals have either been housed, referred to other treatment facilities, and placed in permanent employment, oftentimes with Moreno Valley employers.

Building “Bridge Housing” for the homeless is something that I’ve proposed to the City Council multiple times, and I will continue to do so until we successfully establish a program. Ideally, we can start by partnering with private partners to establish a dozen or two dozen pallet or tiny homes in the City, which will help us provide the homeless with beds. Once in the pallet home, we will work with our County, State, and private partners to provide the wrap around services such as mental health care, drug rehabilitation, employment, and more.

Education & Workforce Training

Investing in our resident’s education is key to the success of our City and the prosperity of our people. During my tenure, I’ve proudly proposed and supported the opening of two brand new library branches: The Mall and Iris Plaza branches. The Iris Plaza branch located in my district is complete with 3-D printers, coding software, virtual reality technology, gaming computers, a conference room, and a children’s area. All of these services are completely free for Moreno Valley residents. This library is unique, in that it is the first in the City to contain these technologies. I felt it was important for our residents to have access to the technology of the future, especially for our most disadvantaged residents who may not be able to afford them.

Additionally, I’ve proudly voted to pay for approximately $300k in student tuition for students at Moreno Valley College. As an MVC alumni, my heart is with our college students, and I will do anything I can to make sure they obtain their certificates, degrees, and go on to pursue their careers without having to choose between higher education or a minimum wage job. By helping pay for their tuition, we let our college students know that we’re here for them, and they can focus more on their studies and less on paying for food and rent.

I’ve also proudly voted to fund our crossing guards, to open the new Teen Spot inside the Recreation Center, to build the City’s first ever Community Demonstration Garden, expand our afterschool programs, and more.

Infrastructure & Road Repairs

citing During my first term in office, I successfully proposed that the City fund an additional $1 million from our surplus funds to repave our roads. Currently, the City has over $60 million worth of road repairs that need to be done around the City. Every year, The City receives funding from SB1, the Gas Tax, and other sources, but it is not enough to fix the backlog that we have. However, just like I proposed additional funding in the past, I’ve identified new funding sources which will help us invest more money toward repaving our roads and fixing potholes.

Additionally, in 2020 the City funded a second Commercial Enforcement Unit. This unit is operated by the Police Department, and is in charge of enforcing our truck routes and citing commercial vehicles in violation of various traffic laws, such as overweight loads. This is important because when “big rigs” drive on non-truck route roads, it exponentially deteriorates the condition of our streets, further worsening the problem. This is why I actively work with our police to report violations, to add signage around my district, to communicate with semi-truck providers, and to strategically build truck stops and truck parking in locations away from neighborhoods, schools, and parks.

Shopping, Dining, and Entertainment

One complaint that I hear consistently from our residents is that there is not enough to do in the City. “I have to drive to Los Angeles or Riverside to do fun things with my family and children”, is something that I’ve heard far too often. This is why I work very closely with my staff and the Economic Development team to bring new companies and developers to our City who build premier dining and shopping opportunities. For example, in the last couple of years, we have brought in a Sprouts Market, Raising Canes, Golden Corral, Hangar, and even built a brand new 600 seat outdoor Amphitheatre and Civic Center. The new amphitheater opened this year, and was instantly a huge hit. We hosted the Moval Movies Moval Rocks summer series, and our 4th of July funfest complete with the historical firework show. With the soon to be complete Demonstration Garden, the City will have more venues and facilities for our residents to enjoy.

Additionally, Rancho Del Sol, previously know as the Moreno Valley Ranch golf course, is finally open after years of being closed. This re-opening took a lot of work and time, but we were able to agree with the new owner to open it up for public play once again. If you drive by the course in the mornings, the parking lot is always full, whether weekday or weekend.

Looking forward, I’m very excited for the construction of the future town center, redevelopment of the Moreno Valley Mall, and the 2028 Olympics. There is so much exciting news on the horizon, and I can’t wait to share more projects that are coming soon.
